Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus

Why we use it:

  • Breathable for improved airflow
  • Wicks moisture away from skin to keep baby dry and help maintain body temperature
  • Liquid-resistant to prevent growth of mold and fungus

Eucalyptus fibers make the softest, most breathable fabric. Sleeping on this pure and natural material is like sleeping on high thread-count linens, only softer. But unlike most linens, eucalyptus fabric is free of synthetic elements like rayon and nylon that reduce breathability.

Eucalyptus fabric does more than just feel good against your skin and provide a gentle surface for your baby’s sweet face. It’s also naturally moisture-wicking and utterly breathable. This fabric draws moisture away from your baby’s skin while she rests. It’s natural for babies to release moisture (sweat) as they sleep – but moisture-wicking eucalyptus fabric ensures it doesn’t irritate her skin or chill her in the night.

Eucalyptus fabric is also so breathable that oxygen naturally flows through it, ensuring optimum airflow for safe sleep and sweet dreams for all. We treat our eucalyptus fabric in a NanoSphere® bath so it maintains its permeability while also preventing moisture from penetrating it. Air flows through, but liquids do not.

Using this material in Nook products is more than just healthier for families – it’s healthier for the environment, too. Harvesting eucalyptus has low environmental impact. In fact, it’s lower than any other natural fiber. The Forest Stewardship Council has also certified eucalyptus as one of the fastest growing resources.

Natural Latex

Natural Latex

Why we use it:

  • Breathable for improved airflow
  • Anti-microbial, anti-mite, hypoallergenic
  • Firm for safe sleep for your baby

When you read the word “latex,” you probably think “synthetic,” right? Well, you might be surprised to find out thatreal latex is all-natural and comes from rubber trees.

While there are synthetic versions out there, Nook products use only the best natural latex because it’s breathable, anti-microbial/mite, hypoallergenic and firm enough to be used safely in crib mattresses.

Natural latex also creates a healthier mattress core for infants because the open-cell structure allows for optimum airflow over and through the mattress. It’s firm enough that when your baby flips onto his belly, it won’t bunch up against his face and cause harmful recirculation of CO2.

Rubber trees, the source of our 100% natural latex materials, are a renewable resource and one of nature’s most efficient CO2 absorbers. Latex can be harvested from these trees without killing them, which means we can provide our customers with the best, healthiest materials without impacting the environment that is so critical to our children’s future.

Zinc

Zinc

Why we use it:

  • Anti-microbial
  • Anti-mite
  • Anti-fungal

“Sleep tight. Don’t let the bedbugs bite.”

That little rhyme takes on a whole new meaning when you have kids. Keeping our kids safe and healthy is our top priority as parents – and protecting their delicate skin and airways is a big part of that.

This is why we fuse all-natural zinc into our eucalyptus fabric. It stops microbes, mites, fungi and mold from adhering to the fabric, making your Nook sleep surface a healthy and clean place to lay your baby’s head.

The potency of zinc never fades. Wash after wash, it continues to resist those microscopic health hazards while remaining safe for your baby’s skin.

Our water-based, all natural zinc formula creates a safe but powerful barrier that not only outperforms the harsh cleaners that are traditionally used to fight germs on mattress surfaces, but also improves the air quality of the air that passes through the mattress. It’s so safe and effective, it earned the bluesign® certification for safety.

Toxic solvents and harsh chemicals have no place in your baby’s sleep environment – or yours. Nook’s zinc fabric technology is pure and healthy, and producing it is easy on the environment. People friendly and planet friendly – that’s a win-win in our book.

Organic Wool

Certified Organic Wool

Why we use it:

  • Disperses heat to help baby maintain safe body temperature
  • Natural fire retardant for improved nursery safety
  • Free of chemicals, formaldehyde, synthetic hormones and pesticides

What do you get when you source certified organic wool from local, family-owned farms for your baby sleep products? A happier, healthier environment – both globally and in your baby’s crib.

You might think wool is too warm to use in a child’s mattress, but it’s actually one of the best materials for keeping your child’s body temperature consistent as she sleeps. It pulls heat away from your baby’s skin and into the mattress core, preventing her from overheating. After all, have you ever seen a sheep overheat in the summer?

Certified organic wool is also free of chemicals, off-gasses, synthetic hormones and pesticides. We use it in our Pebble Pure Crib Mattress to ensure the healthiest sleep environment possible for your baby.

Wool has an ignition temperature three times higher than that of cotton or synthetics. In a nutshell, it's one of the safest, healthiest and most effective fire retardants available.

Sourcing as much of this wool as possible from local farms encourages good grazing practices, helps sustain the land for future generations and helps our local economy.

Organic Cotton

Certified Organic Cotton

Why we use it:

  • Free of chemicals, synthetic hormones and pesticides
  • Durable to hold up in high-temperature washes
  • Soft for more comfortable sleep

Nook standards aren’t easy to live up to. We searched high and low for a textile that was both pure and comfortable. Something that had never been touched by chemicals or pesticides. Something that is gentle on our babies’ skin, but holds up when washed.

Certified organic cotton was the perfect solution. It’s naturally durable to hold up even with high-temperature washes – yet it’s still soft and gentle against your baby’s skin.

What does this mean for you? A healthier, more comfortable sleep environment for your baby and your whole family.

PETE

PETE

Why we use it:

  • Breathable for improved airflow
  • Non-toxic, non-leaching
  • Made from recycled materials
  • Helps maintain structural integrity of mattress

Yes, there is such a thing as a healthy plastic, and we use it to make our Pebble Lite mattress and LilyPad even safer for your family.

We use PETE fibers to create a sturdy yet breathable layer inside the Pebble Lite mattress. This layer promotes airflow through the mattress while maintaining the mattress’s shape and strength. We also use it in our Lilypads for a comfortable, breathable layer of cushioning.

Translation for sleep-deprived parents: Our PETE material ensures your infant or toddler will sleep in a more oxygen-rich environment. And that leads to a longer, more restful night’s sleep for everyone.

PETE (polyethylene terephthalate). is non-toxic, non-leaching, eco-friendly plastic that is safety certified by Oeko-Tex®. It’s so safe, the FDA has approved it for bottling drinking water – and it’s so easily recycled, it means less unnecessary plastic in our landfills.

Organic Kapok

Certified Organic Kapok

Why we use it:

  • Breathable for improved airflow
  • Free of chemicals, synthetic hormones and pesticides
  • Supple yet firm and resilient to maintain shape and comfort

When we created the Niche Feeding Pillow, we looked high and low for an organic filler that would be supple enough to rest our arms on, firm enough to provide support for our babies’ little bottoms and backs, and resilient enough to bounce back into shape after each use. Certified organic kapok was the perfect solution.

Kapok, also known as silk-cotton, is obtained from the seed pods of the Ceiba Tree. It is often used as an alternative to down to create a soft, eco-friendly filling without the use of animal products.

While this natural material provides absolute comfort in our Niche Feeding Pillow, it also does one other very important thing: It helps maintain airflow through the pillow. When you spend hours a day with a baby in your lap, breathability matters! Other pillows leave your lap sweaty and your baby uncomfortably warm – but the kapok filling in our Niche Feeding Pillow keeps you and your baby cool and comfy.
