Airflow & SIDS

Dear Moms and Dads,

SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is not an easy thing to discuss. It worries every parent of every newborn. It certainly worries us as parents, and as people making the mattresses your babies sleep on. Despite the anxiety we all feel, it's important that we discuss SIDS and how to lessen the risks.

No one really knows why SIDS occurs. There have been many studies and there are many theories. As parents and as creators of some of the safest, healthiest baby sleep solutions on the market, we have done our research on it.

Some experts say that SIDS may stem from babies breathing in harmful chemicals and low-level toxins found in the crib space and nursery.

A 2008 medical research study from UC Berkeley and Kaiser Permanente indicated that improved ventilation and air circulation within the nursery—and especially in the immediate crib area—may reduce the occurrence of SIDS by as much as 70%.

Based on our research, there are several steps you can and should take to reduce SIDS risks for your newborn:

  1. Ensure that nothing in your nursery contains harmful chemicals or other toxins.
  2. Make sure the air in the nursery is moving and refreshed. Simply adding a fan can help immensely.
  3. Remove anything within the crib that might block or impede airflow -- especially anything that might get bunched up around your baby's face. Crib bumper pads, crib pillows, blankets and stuffed animals are all on this list.
  4. Choose a crib mattress designed to reduce SIDS risks as you understand them.

Please, stop reading right now and go do these four things. They are THAT important.

Now that you've taken those actions, we'd like to explain Nook's take on the results of SIDS research, and how we've designed our mattresses to address those findings.

We believe the Kaiser study's findings about air circulation impact two things as your child sleeps: air quality and body temperature.

Effective ventilation moves exhaled CO2 (carbon dioxide) away from your baby's face and allows him to breathe fresh, oxygenated air. It also helps dissipate the heat buildup under your sleeping baby to keep him cooler.

The design and materials of your baby's crib mattress play a vital role in moving and freshening that stagnated air.

We designed every Nook crib mattress to keep clean, oxygen-enriched air moving freely around your baby's face. We've chosen organic and non-toxic materials to keep the air in the crib as pure as possible—and when we couldn't find exactly what we needed, we created the material ourselves.

We did all of this with one goal in mind: to reduce your baby's SIDS risk as much as possible.

But we didn't stop there. We couldn't. This goal was just too important. We also designed our mattresses to be:

  1. Complete sleep systems. The mattress core and cover are a single purchase, because we didn't want someone else's mattress cover to negate all the benefits of our mattress.
  2. Breathable all the way through. Nook mattress cores allow air and heat to flow all the way through them, and they're not wrapped in plastic like so many other crib mattresses are -- so with a Nook mattress, air won't get trapped on the mattress surface and stagnate around your sleeping baby. Fresh, cooler air is circulated around your little one to keep her body temperature steadier and allow her to breathe clean air.
  3. Airflow enablers. The Pebble mattress cover has a raised pattern that facilitates airflow over the surface of the mattress. It's breathable to allow airflow through the mattress core and around your baby, too. This helps dissipate heat buildup under your baby, keeping her cooler and more comfortable as she sleeps
  4. Moisture-wicking. Our mattress covers are made from eucalyptus, which is not only so much softer than cotton, but does a much better job of wicking away moisture. The eucalyptus fabric has been nano-treated to make it liquid-resistant but still air permeable. This means moisture won't get trapped against your baby's skin, and the air he breathes will be continually refreshed.
  5. Free of microbes and allergens. To eliminate elements that might irritate your baby's airways and skin, we infused the Pebble mattress cover with natural zinc to keep microbes and allergens at bay.

We can’t claim that our crib mattresses eliminate SIDS risks. No one should make those claims. But we can tell you that we have done everything we can think of to make sure your baby is safe, healthy and comfortable as he rests on a Nook product. We can tell you that our mattresses will ensure clean, dry air circulation around your sleeping child. And we can tell you that there are no harsh chemicals anywhere in our products or packaging.

We do the best we can as parents to keep our kids healthy and happy, and we will continue our commitment to do the same for yours. At Nook, we believe that starts with good sleep for your baby and worry-free sleep for you.
